VFYW: Hannibal, But No Chianti
For contest #369, we travel to a popular tourist area that once witnessed an epic bloodbath. Also, eels.

First up, here’s a confused note from the super-sleuth in Providence (not Kingston, as I accidentally mislabeled him last week):
Heya Chris! I’m pretty sure you’re quoting me on the contest screaming “FLORIDA!” ... but you are somehow citing the (wretched, corrupt, Swamp-Yankee) town I grew up in, Kingston — from which I escaped as fast as I could. Just curious: have I somehow let my hometown slip, or is there a closed loop somewhere that I’m not aware of?!
My swapping of the towns was simply a clerical error on my part, toward the end of a 16-hour workday. There is a super-sleuth in Kingston, but he’s actually from Kingston, Ontario, not Kingston, Rhode Island — where our confused sleuth is from. A totally eerie coincidence. Sorry to the Providence sleuth for the hometown PTSD!
Next up, our super-sleuth in Baltimore remarks on the newly implemented deadline for the window contest (Wednesday night at midnight):
I applaud the new more rigorous cut-off rule. Really it’s amazing how you managed to get such high-quality updates published for so long without a strict cut-off. I just hope the rule doesn’t actually mean 12:00 a.m. (midnight) Wednesday, because I guess that would have been this morning and I missed it already. Here’s hoping it's actually 11:59 p.m. Wednesday.
Yep, that’s right. Another sleuth: “I’m actually grateful that you instituted a deadline — not just because it’s fair to you, but because it frees me from additional hours of staring at thousands of photos.” From the super-sleuth in Southport:
I will make sure to comply with your new deadline, which seems very reasonable — even though procrastinators like me will have to start our window searching a little earlier. By the way, I failed to photograph any good windows during my recent trip to Key West. If I’m honest, I just forgot. Maybe I should blame Tristan, the great bartender we found at La Te Da on the “quiet end” of Duval Street. I highly recommend paying a visit there.
For those who don’t have the Tristan excuse, please email your photo candidates to contest@andrewsullivan.com — and don’t forget to include part of the window frame, and horizontal shots are preferred. If your photo is selected, you’ll get six months added to your subscription (and please remind me if I forget).
Another sleuth writes:
Streak is at 11 for Team Bellevue! As folks who submit late in the week, we can’t help but feel responsible for the new policy. With our apologies, we’d beg you to consider a three-hour extension to midnight PACIFIC time, if only to allow those of us who do this at work a couple other weekdays (and evenings) to do our submission …
In all my benevolence and mercy, yes, PST it is. On to this week’s window, our first guess:
Hi Chris! No time/patience for a real guess this week (which is consistent with my limited other guesses), but this image immediately brings to mind the Kinneret area of Israel, particularly the Sea of Galilee, which is one of my favorite vistas in the country. I’m probably not right, because this could definitely be some beautiful lake in Italy, but in the off-chance it’s Israel (a country I’ve visited seven times, and after a long-awaited COVID break, I’m heading back in a month) and I didn’t guess it, I would be annoyed with myself. Hope you’re having a nice week!
A tiring week, but looking forward to the Dish’s spring break next week — which will give you an extra week to procrastinate with the new window (it’s especially challenging). So the contest will resume on April 14.
Our UWS sleuth from Cali:
It’s almost Wednesday at midnight — and nothing! Could be Dalmatian coast, somewhere in the Balkans, or on the coast of Turkey. Lots of looking, but nothing yet. What I do know for sure is that with another 36 hours I would definitely find it.
A more specific guess:
Lake Rotorua, New Zealand? Regardless if correct or incorrect, it’s good to see a landscape rather than a cityscape.
Another entry is simply “Annecy, France.” There weren’t too many wrong guesses this week. The SF wine-geek identifies the right country:
Happy Wednesday, Chris! I almost spaced out on the new deadline. I like it, actually.
A while back, one of the super-sleuths observed that it helps if you have a hunch which country to focus on first. That was certainly true for me with this contest. The cypress trees, the general architecture of the buildings in the background, the terrain, and the agriculture all contributed to my initial hunch that we are in Italy — somewhere in the central part.
Being the wine nerd that I am, I was happy to learn that our window view includes the flat lands leading to a winery called Tenuta Lamborghini. Here’s a photo from the vineyards with an arrow pointing in the general vicinity of the window:
The winery was founded in the 1960s by Ferruccio Lamborghini — yes, the car guy. His daughter Patricia now runs it. I’ve never had any Lamborghini wines (nor have I ever been in a Lamborghini car), but their main wine — Campoleone, a blend of Sangiovese and Merlot — gets some good reviews. It doesn’t appear to be sold in my area, so it might be awhile before I get to taste it.
And so thanks, Chris, because I learned something new about wine today!
A previous winner notes, “At first I was thinking Tuscany, but that was ruled out by the absence of a suitable body of water.” So no Chianti this week — a wine that is only produced in Tuscany. And my headline doesn’t refer to this Hannibal:
The super-sleuth in DC names the right region:
